I Used to Hide My Hands. Now I Run a Nail Blog
For most of my twenties I sat on my hands in meetings. Bitten cuticles, peeling tips, two nails on my right hand that never grew past the fingertip no matter what oil or hard as nails treatment I threw at them.
I’m Valentina Ortiz, and I started NailCareGlow because the version of me at twenty four needed a site exactly like this one and couldn’t find it. What she found instead were affiliate roundups written by people who had clearly never chipped a fresh manicure loading a dishwasher.
So I built the site I wanted back then. Ten years of trial, error, ruined nails, and a few genuinely good manicures later, this is where all of it lives.
Why nails, of the thousand things I could have picked
Nails are small. That’s the part people underestimate. You can change how your whole hand feels in an afternoon, for the cost of a bottle of polish, with no appointment and no permission. When a lot of my life felt out of my control at twenty six, painting my nails on a Sunday night was the one thing I could finish and see.
The obsession grew from there. I taught myself to file a proper square-oval instead of hacking at my nails with whatever was in the bathroom. I learned that my peeling wasn’t a moisture problem, it was me using my thumbnail as a box cutter. Small fixes, big difference. That gap, between what salons imply is complicated and what actually works at your kitchen table, is the whole reason this blog exists.
What actually lives on this site
I write about the things I use, in the order a real person needs them.
- Nail care and repair. Peeling, ridges, hangnails, slow growth. The unglamorous stuff nobody pins but everybody searches at 11pm.
- At-home nail art. Designs you can do with a dotting tool and a steady-ish hand, not just the ones that need a full studio and a light box.
- Polish and color guides. Which shades read warm or cool on real skin tones, tested on my own hands and my sister’s, who has much darker skin than mine and got ignored by every color guide I ever read.
- Press-ons and gel at home. How to apply them so they last, and more importantly how to take them off without tearing your nail plate the way I did in 2019 and regretted for four months.
If a post can’t tell you something specific and useful, I don’t publish it. I have deleted more drafts than I’ve kept.
How I test before I tell you anything
I keep a shoebox with sixty three polish bottles sorted by undertone, warm on the left, cool on the right, and a sticker on each one with the date I opened it. Nerdy, yes. But it’s how I know a formula that goes gloopy after six months versus one that’s still fine at a year.
Every polish I review goes in a spreadsheet with columns for the brand, the day it first chipped, how many coats it needed, and honestly how bad it smelled. I wear a color for at least a full week of normal life, washing dishes and typing and opening cans, before I say a word about wear time. When I recommend a press-on set, I’ve worn it. When I skip a viral technique, it’s usually because I tried it and it flooded my cuticles.
I’m not a licensed technician, and I’ll never pretend to be one. What I am is someone who has done her own nails several hundred times, kept notes, and cares whether the advice actually holds up on your hands and not just in a ten-second video.

Trust is the only thing a site like this really has, so here’s how NailCareGlow is run.
Every article is checked against reliable sources and my own hands-on testing before it goes live. Nothing publishes until I’ve read it through for accuracy and edited it so a beginner can follow it without a dictionary. Ingredient claims and safety notes get a second look, because “it’s just nail polish” stops being true the moment someone with a sensitivity trusts what I wrote.
Older posts don’t get to sit and rot. Formulas get reformulated, products get discontinued, and trends move, so I go back and refresh guides when the information changes, with the update noted so you know it’s current.
when a link earns me a commission or a brand has paid for placement, you’ll see it said plainly at the top of the post. No buried disclosures, no pretending a sponsored review is a neutral one. If I wouldn’t put it on my own nails, it doesn’t get a recommendation here, paid or not.
What I want you to walk away with
I don’t want you to need this blog forever. I want you to read a few posts, fix the one thing that’s been bugging you, and get good enough that you stop second-guessing yourself at the polish shelf.
Maybe that’s finally growing out the nail you’ve bitten since childhood. Maybe it’s one clean french tip you did yourself for a wedding. Maybe it’s just knowing which base coat to buy so you stop wasting money. Whatever it is, I’ve probably tried the hard way first so you don’t have to.
